Preface
Doing research on the pedigree of his family, I could not imagine how many secrets and mysteries she keeps. I found out a family legend about the romantic love of my great-grandfather on the maternal side, Shenkurskiy farmer, Korobitsyna Ivan Ilyin, a Gypsy girl Mariela, the daughter of the Gypsy Baron. About mysterious disappearance of Irina Korobitsyna, daughter of Mitro Ivanovich Korobitsyn, brother of my mother's father, Korobitsyn Stefan (Stepan) Ivanovich. According to my mother, Nina Stepanovna Korobitsyna, Irina was very beautiful, became a ballerina, danced at the Bolshoi theater in Moscow. Her fate was attended by Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin, the Russian chief, helped to get an apartment in Moscow. Then she disappeared without a trace. This mystery went unsolved along with it.

In the last years of his life, the mother often spoke of uncle Adolf: tall, handsome, with a bushy, neatly trimmed beard, very kind, but strict man. Often I went to the nursery, played with children, but never punished for childish pranks. Once they made a fire in the nursery, but even in this case it cost only a serious conversation. Unfortunately, she completely forgot his name. Or rather remembered, but with distortion ", Lakebrook". And no wonder! So many years of silence.
All this puzzled me, never heard such a name from anyone before. And of course, about this man. I could not understand how he appeared in Arkhangelsk. Then again, to my shame, I knew nothing about the "German settlement." Moreover, I did not know about this relationship. Mysteries are everywhere!
Turned to his colleagues who are also involved in the study and compilation of genealogies of German families (their ancestors, in the main, was a merchant of the title). But, none of such names are not heard.
And once, at the beginning of their search, in the register of births for the year 1909 found the statement on infant baptism, Korobitsyna Celestina Stepanovich, my uncle. His sponsors at baptism Festival, the Cathedral was listed: "Saint - Petersburg merchant of the 1st Guild Pavlov Krutov (who? – again, a mystery) and the wife of the senior warden of the Arkhangelsk Excise, collegiate assessor Hristianova Adolf von Schnakenburg, Julia Celestina, Snakenberg".
Further appealed to the State Archive of the Arkhangelsk region, to Salacinol Tatiana Anatolievna. Archive got the track record (incomplete) and a certificate of the death of Adolf Hristianova von Schnakenburg. He died in Arkhangelsk on February 24, 1918, diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. And was buried here in the Lutheran cemetery.
It was a start, and then the information I found myself in the Memorial books in the Arkhangelsk province, in the Address calendars. But, I wanted to know more not only about him personally, and all of the ancestors on this line. Helped the case! Somehow came across the book "the Germans and the Russian North". Read the article Shumilova Nikolay Alekseevich, the Director of the State archive of Arkhangelsk region, but at the end of the article the footnote, that in Hamburg lived a certain "Mr Henry Meyer von ELTZ, now deceased, who was engaged in the study and compilation of genealogies of German families living in Arkhangelsk".
I thought that after the death of Mr. Heinrich Meyer-von ELTZ there should be an archive and if his relatives are kind and sympathetic, they will definitely help me. But, I had yet to find them! Wrote a letter to the Red Cross of Germany, asking to help find the relatives of Mr. Meyer - von ELTZ. This happened in February 2001.
And that same, from Germany came the answer. Mr. Meyer-von ELTZ was alive and well. He answered me, we began to correspond. Make friends! For what I had to re-learn German, as my friend did not know Russian, he was taken from Russia at the age of seven, and I did not know German.
Mr. Meyer-von ELTZ knew about such a surname and was even familiar with the eldest son of Adolf Emil von Schnakenburg from his first marriage, Gugen Adolf von Schnakenburg (*1885 St. Petersburg - + Hamburg?). Their acquaintance lasted until 1939.
Mr. Meyer von ELTZ sent a lot of documents on the genealogies of families who lived in the "German quarter" of the city of Arkhangelsk (Lyurs, Lindes, Shtop, Scholz, van Brinen and others). And also for me an extract from the German genealogy book (Deutsches Geschlechterbuch, band 79, Leipzig, 1933 edition) with its notes relating to the genus Adolf Christian Emil von Schnakenburg.
Many thanks to him for his help and cooperation. To the great regret
My friend Heinrich Meyer von Yelts went to the other world on 01.04.2006. The bright memory of him!

"We are all living monuments to those
who lost
The existence of the German settlement in Russia, Moscow, St. Petersburg (German settlement), Arkhangelsk, and its formation can not be considered an accident. It was primarily due to foreign trade, in which Russia has always been interested.
The Dutch, the British, the Germans, the Scandinavians, who were young, energetic and enterprising people, went to the unexplored worlds to seek luck and happiness. This has led many in Russia to stay in which was more than favorable conditions. Myriad natural resources: vast water areas, innumerable fish resources, luxurious forests, the absence of Russian competitors and the benefits that foreigners have enjoyed for a long time, sometimes to the direct detriment of the indigenous Russian merchants — all this created a favorable climate for the trading business.
No exception was Ludwig Wilhelm Snakenberg, which in 1807 at the age of 22 years he came to Russia and settled in Riga. In the same year took Russian citizenship and was recorded at the merchant (the Case of reception in citizenship of Russia and write to the merchant, год1807, RGALI фонд13 опись1 Д636).
Ludwig Wilhelm was born Snakenberg 22.03.1785 year in Hamburg to a merchant family, of German nationality, Roman Catholic. Came to Russia already, as a merchant, warden of the merchant Guild in Hamburg. Became the founder of the dynasty, the ancestor of the genus, its Baltic branch, Russia (representative of the genus in the tenth generation known to us).
The origin of the family name is the name of the area Schnakenburg. (*Schnakenburg is a small town in Northern Germany, on the border with Poland).
In the documents of the German state library in Leipzig repeatedly referred to this ancient noble family. Has its own coat of arms with the subsequent explanations: in silver on green mountain, red fortress (castle) with two gold crosses, mounted on the pointed towers, around which are intertwined two rings, staring out, black snakes with red tongues and gold teeth; on a red and silver helmet with the same reason of the castle with the snake emblem.
According to reliable information, the ancestor of the genus belonged to the members of magistrate Neuruppin. According to ”the annals of Feldmannia” when the magistrate Neuruppin (a suburb of Brandenburg, on the Elbe river) the beginning of the race put Achim, Schnakenburg, homeowner Neuruppin, date of birth unknown. Date of death indicated about 1532,1541 he Is a member of the genus in the ninth branch is mentioned in ancient manuscripts "diplomatikus Branderburgensis", the successor of sorts, a descendant of which is Ludwig Wilhelm Snakenberg (* 22.03.1785, Hamburg + 19.10.1856, Riga).
31.01.1808 year he married Caroline Frederick Ludwig (Ludwigh), daughter of Christian Ludwig Engelbrecht, Riga city notary notary office.
At the beginning of the X1X century the main direction of Russia's foreign policy was the fight against Napoleonic France. By this time, much of Europe had been occupied by French troops. In 1811году the contradictions between Russia and France deteriorated sharply, merchants and nobles demanded the rejection of the continental blockade and secretly traded with England. It was a challenge to Napoleon! And 12(24) June 1812 the Patriotic war began, it was a national-osvoboditelnaya war of Russia against the aggression of France. In early 1812 Napoleon signed military agreements with Austria and Prussia, under which the latter exhibited auxiliary corps, for which they were promised, belonging to Russia: the Baltic States, Volhynia.
Time was heavy and unpredictable. Therefore, before the war of 1812, the family moved to St. Petersburg. By the time the family already had two small children, and the wife was waiting for the third child. In St. Petersburg, Ludwig Wilhelm had two sons: Valentin Wilhelm (*13.10.1812), died in infancy; Friedrich Wilhelm (* 09.04.1814), who later became a doctor of medical Sciences.
After the war, the family returned to Riga. The family of Ludwig Wilhelm Schnakenburg had 12 children, survived six, they all served in different fields for the benefit of Russia.
The eldest son of Christians Ludwig, a representative of the genus in the 11th generation, was born in Riga 24.12.1809 year.
With the rank of Colonel of the Tsar's Russian army in St. Petersburg, the Main Department of Railways and public buildings, the Department of railway engineering corps. He supervised Arkhangelsk, Novgorod and Olonets provinces. In 1856году Christian Ludwig was listed in the St. Petersburg province noble registry (RGALI Ф200 op.1 h. 1 D1996 L. 3 year 1883).
In September 1836, was made the examination of the floating bridge over the Kuznechikha river in Arkhangelsk. At that time he was still in the position of major Of the Department of Railways of St. Petersburg (GAAO, F. 37op.1 74 D. L. 35,35.).
Here in Arkhangelsk, he met his future wife. The girl's name was Emilia von Dost (*Arkhangelsk 26.04.1815 - + Riga, Pernau 28.03.1893). She was the daughter of a military doctor (regimental physician), senior resident of the military hospital, its founder in Arkhangelsk, a native of the city of Mecklenburg, George Ludwig von Dost. Georg Ludwig von Dost (*1772– +1839arch-SK) arrived in Arkhangelsk in 1802godu on invitation of tsarist the government doctors for Russian army (GAAO F. 37.Op.1 D. 74 L. 35ob.). In 1819, during the highest visit by Emperor Alexander 1 to the city of Arkhangelsk, George Ludwig von Dost, the staff physician, was awarded a diamond ring.
Wife of the state councillor Georg Ludwig von Dost Elizabeth Romanova von Dost, geborene von Scheel, (GAAO F201 T2 D1937a)
Friedrich Wilhelm (*9.04.1814,- 11.01.1878,Riga), doctor of medicine, lived in Riga, bachelor.
Georg Ernst Emil (*15.05.1811, Hamburg-11.11.1869, Moscow), merchant, was married to Russian, lived in Moscow;

His son Nikolay Borisovich, Schnakenburg (04.02.1907 -1941.), post-graduate student of sector of Siberia of MAE SPb thrown in its lot with distant Chukotka. On the recommendation of Professor Bogoraz V. G. (read a course in ethnogeography at Leningrad University), perhaps the Professor, thus, wanted to save his student from arrest, he interrupted his studies at the University and went on a long working practice. In a telegram to his teacher he wrote: "Go into the wilderness to the river Vankarem (perhaps Vankarem). I am firmly confident in myself and in my work." Before the war he made another trip to the Bering sea. Left a valuable message very little known in the past, the Koryak group, known as Karachi. According to the results of practice published an article "Nymylany - Karachi"//"Soviet North", 1939. No. 3 (Karachi – nationality, speak Chukchi and Russian, maintained Kerensky language).
About N. B. Snakenberg and his colleagues at the Institute, we can say that the more time they spent in the Museum or in the field. For a long time lived and worked among the peoples studied by them — shelkunov, Nenets, Evenki, Chukchi. and Knowing their language, they taught the children, and, most importantly, was directly involved in the preparation of teaching materials (primers, grammars, etc.).
In 1937, an expedition of the all-Union Arctic Institute worked on the East coast of the Koryak upland. The ethnographer N. B.Snakenberg(109)has published some General observations, concerning the usual sea birds olyutorskogo coast from Cape Wittenstein to the mouth of the river Muleteam (the First real mention of the birds of Kamchatka was made in "scasco" Vladimir Atlasova, written as a result of his trip to Kamchatka in 1697году).

With large scientific plans N. B.Schnakenburg entered the graduate school of the Institute of MAE*, but failed to implement them. Began the Great Patriotic war 1941-1945gg. Winter 1941-42gg. - the most difficult period of the siege of Leningrad. Nine employees of the Institute, among whom were N. B.Snakenberg , joined the ranks of the militia, the composition of the Primorskiy division, created in July 1941, much of which was academics. Especially heavy were the September fights when the enemy came close to Leningrad. They were ordered to fight to the death. And they ... stood. Nikolai Borisovich, Snakenberg died in the first year of the war. About his fate learned not immediately: he fell in capturing. Fascists have proposed him, as a German, to cooperate with them, but he refused and was shot.

Children early orphaned. 24.02.1918 Adolf Christian von Schnakenburg died. He was buried at the Lutheran cemetery in the city of Arkhangelsk. It is no wonder that all this time played a cruel joke. Already в1914году, summer in Russia was "German question" who created problems for normal living of the Russian population with non-Russian names. Has not bypassed it and Arkhangelsk. Unauthorized searches, confiscation of property, arrests! Many of then even had to leave Arkhangelsk.
After the death of the breadwinner, the family was left without funds. The auction at which it was held
sold more or less valuable, the situation has not improved. The family adopted sister Yulia Celestino Maria Celestina, born of Cosmin and Stepan Korobitsyna. But it so happened that in 1920году die Julia Celestina. Orphaned children took care of the family Korobitsyna.
In the 1930s Emilia Adolfovna was exiled to the Kotlas of Arkhangelsk province, where she married a Russian, Peshkova. As said earlier, "hiding behind a Russian name". They moved to Vologda, where they had a son Oleg. But some rock was stalking this family. The boy died tragically in a car accident. Oleg graduated from Vologda dairy Institute. I was getting married. Died together with the bride.
Emilia Adolfovna lived all her life in Vologda, working as a land surveyor, died in 1994.
Raphael Adol'fovich graduated from the course in communications, worked as a radio operator on the New Earth. Before the beginning of World war II 1941-1945gg. he was exiled to Kazakhstan. Its further fate is unknown.
So stopped (broke) this branch of the genus Schnakenburg on the male line in Russia.

Afterword
This is all we have been able to tell about Schnakenburg at the moment, thanks to the friendly help of our friends from Germany. Now have the opportunity to study further the kind in St. Petersburg. I think there are interesting finds! But what we already know fills our hearts with respect and pride. Russia took the adventurers with an open heart, giving them shelter, job, family, and some of us citizenship.
And they responded with great gratitude to his new Homeland, serving honestly and in good faith for its benefit, giving their knowledge and power.
Here, in Russia, they have reached certain heights – fame, honor and respect. Many of them found their last shelter here, and their ashes rest in Russia.
But, hopefully, not to disappear in the vast expanses of Russia representatives (descendants) of this vast decent sort. Perhaps after reading this message, someone will respond and we will be able to know their further fate.
We know that the descendants of the genus Schnakenburg live in Germany. History of German settlement – it is our story. Foreigners, most of whom had Russian citizenship, along with Russians made a great contribution to the development of the economy, history and culture of our Northern region – the Russian North, and Russia!
This story has a continuation. Recently I read in the magazine "Neva time" №236(1639) 26.12.1997 "Today in the Academic Capella opens up international music festival "Supercade" of Snakenberg – Saint-Petersburg". Summer "schubertiads" are held annually in the German city of Schnakenburg, the name of the area, which gave the name of the genus Schnakenburg.
The atmosphere of ease of Schubert evenings in Schnakenburg, where in 1993 he organized a music festival “Schubertiaden Schnackenburg”, recreated Arkady Tsenziper*. The festival is held annually, and in recent years crossed the border of Germany, having visited St. Petersburg and Israel.
* Arkady Tsentsiper-pianist, teacher, public figure. He was born in Leningrad in 1858 and graduated from the Conservatoire. N..Rimsky-Korsakov, and studied with professors Sokolov and N. Perelman. A. At the end of April 2012 I received a letter, the response to my article "Race, Snakenberg in Russia" on the website "Archangelica-the children of German settlement", from the great-grandson of Adolph Christian Emil von Schnakenburg Andrew Kopittseva. From which we learn that before his arrest, Snakenberg Raphael Adol'fovich married Marie Alexandrovna, Kopytseva, it happened in Gagra (how he got there – a mystery??? the family never spoke about it). In this marriage were born two children: Julia and Emil * 193? Gagra - + 1993 Vladimir.the link with my husband, Maria, and having two small children, did not go, remained in Gagra and changed the name to their children in their family, they began Kopittseva. Diary (in letters) Nikolay Borisovich Snakenberg
Arctic ocean, July 1930 s /s " Kolyma»

Seventh day around the ice, the Ocean is angry. The steamer stands motionless on an ice anchor, caught on an ice floe. Winter in July. Gray sky, cold, creeping fog Bank. The coast stretches dull mountains, devoid of vegetation. Stone, fog, sad sky, cold and ice. Polar summer has begun. The sun is hiding in the clouds. Day and night there. Light day and night. In the sky and the horizon solid white lines, it's icy glow, a glare of ice in the ocean. Ices. Flat fields look like a huge tablecloth of the purest leaf, stand, enveloping the horizon. White hills, dirty tops, and icy mountain ranges with ridges surround the ship. High pointed mountains, eaten by waves, sun and wind, swinging, floating to the East. Wormwood in tens of meters wide the only way the ship. Day and night there. The captain of the third day on the bridge. The captain's experience of polar navigation under the supervision of famous Dubnickova with "F. Litke". The XO does not come with the "crow's nest", so-called barrel on a mast from watching the ice. XO has not taken his binoculars from his eyes, looking for a clean hole. The ice field under the sky. The steamer immediately hits the ice. Floe is, and steamboat throws a push sideways. The jolts and bumps are heard every minute. From shocks the body shudders, the walls of the swaying cabin, people soften their knees. The terrible roar of the screw shakes the steamer. Scraping the blows of a five-ton screw on the ice leads to a concussion all. Sailors rush to the stern and look into the water with alarm. Boatswain remembers relatives in the maternal line. Broke the blade of the screw. Now "Kolyma" is on three blades. The case worse, lose the entire propeller. In that case, the deck lies a spare. The ship crashes into the icy gorge. Ice scraping on the iron plating. It seems that the wall will stick out sharp ice. The Windows block the high mountains. The gentle blue of the ice shimmering with crystalline purity, closes the light. It's the ice above the deck. Here the steamer descends and gets out, no further progress. Comes to the aid of dynamite. On long poles tied to the deadly bundle. Light the fuse. Pass out minutes. Ice floes explode with a roar. Broken ice flies up to the sky. A water column is scattered by the fountain. Ice floe shudders. Cracks run in all directions. Small ice floes, having broken off, turn over in water. Water cascades into the ocean. The ice floe does not calm down, swinging for a long time and turning over in the water. The boat departs back for overclocking. Crack calls to the full. A terrible jolt knocks the boat sideways. Cutting the sound ice on the iron breaks the silence. Ice floe is worth. Again, people descend on the ice with packs of dynamite. A terrible explosion shakes the air. High off the ice and water. Ice floe cracks in half, flips over, hits in anger steamer. Neighboring ice floes swing from the waves. The steamer goes back for a new blow. Calls to the engine room require maximum screw speed. The mechanic increases the pressure of the sea. The nose cuts into the ice. Cries of joy rush from the deck. Ice floe went forward.

But sometimes it's a pity that I don't sing or play, I would like to listen to good music. Although we both hum to them and not heard the Aria, but the music is a good thing. Perhaps many of my letters seem funny, I write so much about ice, wind and rain, but that's the situation, hide it won't. I grew up in the middle climate have to rebuild themselves all in a new way. More than a year as I broke away from the home environment. It's hard to tell how many miles I've made, it seems like about 21,000 kilometers. I can't get rid of the lack of Newspapers and news. For the past year, as only in fits and starts read Newspapers. Still, I'm still cheerful and cheerful.
We're in order on the Northern Cape, we'll be replaced several times a day. Miroshnichenko main man, sorry for leaving. He participated in the rescue expedition to search for Eielson and Borland ides from the'. Do you remember last year it killed two Americans. At Cape North was the schooner "Nanuk" "JwesonFurTradingCompany" (trade fur company Swenson). They stood have the most of the village. For fur flew pilots, some safely taken to Alaska. The second time flew and disappeared. It was November 9th. This afternoon I went to the dogs of Ahn'qiraj(?) in Kamchatka. The search flew three airplanes from Alaska and Canada. Our pilots Galyshev and Slepnev took an active part in the search. Naselennom there was so much ice as ever. In February Americans found the river Anguivi. Now I have under the bed are aluminum stands with American aircraft, I gave them to the memory Miroshnichenko. On the street still lying pants and jacket Ailson. Schooner "Karise" brought Miroshnichenko clippings and magazines. I read the article. Western state Newspapers are full of regrets. Alison was one of the leaders of the “Alaska –AirwayCompany”. In our magazines also had articles. Maybe we will fly the plane from Wellen seem to bring the letter.

Office memorandum.
Dear Nadezhda Pavlovna! Today we have a trace.a telegram from Your son to the Smidovich: (through Whelan) " the school works, he is alive and well, began a hunger strike, took steps to the rehandling of kerosene from the Cape of Billings, well as fats, oils, thrown Swenson at the scene of destruction "Elsif" (schooner). RICK will throw off the Cape Heart-Stone meat of sea animals, flour, continue to trade, zav.factor is still missing. 31 Dec profit workers Rick for the election of the company. Today, January 21 to the West of the Northern Cape heard a noise similar to the engine of the aircraft. Answer. Hello Schnackenburg." As you can see, Your son is alive and well. The Committee of the North will respond to him. He needs to address: Whalen Snakenberg to the North Cape.
Hello. P. Galkin.
Lawrence Bay, Bering Strait,Chukchi kultbaza. 01.01.1931.
Dear father and mother! Yesterday I received two telegrams from my grandmother and now I expect news from you. Don't complain to me that I've been in the North for a couple more years. Any business demands serious attention and if I decided to work in the North, it seriously and for a long time. My job is needed and I take from the Committee of the North and bogoraza*support. Comfortable life on the mainland, the fun of youth must be discarded. So! To myself I was and will be extremely strict. Work in the North show and not the travel records of reporters who unfortunately is known in the maps (?)
*Mr G. Tan-Bogoraz(*27.- 4.1865-10.05.1936, buried at Volkov cemetery in St. Petersburg) specialist in Ethnography Chukchi, scientist, writer, public figure, outstanding Russian ethnographer and anthropologist of the twentieth century, was considered the Patriarch of the Soviet Northern studies. Since 1918 he headed the work in Mahe; Chairman of the Committee of the North under the Presidium of the vcic. A fortnight after the liberation of the city of Arkhangelsk from invaders in 1920, was organized the North scientific field expedition for scientific-technical Department of the Supreme economic Council, to the leadership of the scientific Council of the expedition were involved and eminent scientist, Professor V. G. tan-Bogoraz. In the 30-ies – first Director of the Museum of Religion in the Kazan Cathedral in Leningrad. After seeing many countries, he wrote: "I Can not live outside Russia." (Tsgali F. 42. Time it requires to reckon with him nothing. This statement only you think is right for yourself. Two years I lived, will live and two more, in it is sure and firm. You though and miss and remember, but you know me. I, too, recall you and try to put help. Winter alone I often read letters and looked at photos, so I was at home. Don't worry about me, will not disappear and will live another couple of years, cheerfully and firmly. Calm coupled with energy, will give confidence in life and in work. For me, these two years have given so much that I will not trade them for a quiet residence at the side of his wife. I am alive and well, I wish all of you all the best, and I wish you cheerful cheerfulness to listen to the howl of the polar Blizzard. News, what news have us. Near Cape North on the river Amguema in the ice sandwiched by two steamers and a schooner. Bad of a schooner. Two days ago, when I was on the radio, a radio operator received a distress call saying, "Listen to me, the rest of you stop working," which was the meaning of three symbols. The radio operator received the telegram. The boat squeezed between two ice fields, kicked the ice, broke the side was leaking, patched the leak, the schooner then stood in the water. Today I was taken details. Not acting steering, broken screw. Two ships provide assistance. Steamships go to the Kolyma region, schooner in Chaun and then Wrangel. On Wrangel someone "crazy", and cingular driven shift. Scurvy thing of course an unpleasant, but I have apparently deal, consider world well. I saw gums turn black and teeth fall out, gums swell, and blood comes. Here have two comrades swollen its feet, and they could not walk, then recovered. Spring attack sleep the person sleepy. Night and day are lost, light, spring and scurvy. I ate in March and often winter seal liver in raw form, meat-venison, frozen raw fish, it helps. I don't like canned food at all. I ate well. Cooked myself. Venison soup with potatoes or soup; the second –fried meat with potatoes, rice porridge, semolina, buckwheat, pearl. Often ate scrambled eggs with bread. Eggs was a lot. Dried eggs are bred, it turns out a liquid cough, then poured into a frying pan –it turns out a real fried egg. Milk was even more-condensed and liquid in banks. Were cabbage, tomatoes, dry onion, fresh potato, a box of orange. Loved to make jelly milk vanilla, cocoa and cranberry extract. Learned and peck decently white and black bread; did pancakes with molasses. As you can see, if I ever have to get married, I'll be able to cook. Several times I made cookies and pudding, bread, cooking happy and not offended, and others. Life is an excellent school! Living conditions this year are good, nothing to worry about. It's summer here. Weather as have us in October-November, hasn't solar days. The last time fogs, rain, the coldness, winter , perhaps, better! Many colors: yellow polar poppy, tiny forget-me-nots, various other colors. In the North, the flowers are very bright. Clean air gives visibility to the dal....? From the window you can see the mountains. In some places even snow. Grey sea, grey sky. In the tundra Arctic willow grows as thick as a pencil, it spread along the ground. As in a dream far-coniferous forest – Usole, green trees and grass in the meadow. Still see. Ducks fly in flocks. Go on the hunt. The expected steamers, two steamers coming here. The third of July came the schooner. Ran ashore. In the Bay was ice, and the schooner was impossible to pass. Then we went to the schooner and we. I received a letter from my mother from last year, from may, where she reports the parcel. The parcel I received, and the letter was happy. Many interesting things learned. On schooner were happily adopted. Drinking tea, listening to the gramophone, reading the newspaper. Last year, the schooner was my guest, and now she has me. Much news. Driving change at the factory, everyone was cheerful and laughing. In that year, the change in island Wrangel laughed too. In winter, some of them are"crazy." In the evening the schooner was left in the ice. The polar sea opened in the middle of July, now there are ice. Schooner in the ice. Across the sea ice to rush in and point-dash, the radio operator pencil draws a nervous line: "only Listen to me, stop". The ice and the sea is not like being disturbed their peace. The schooner must go forward, still have August and six days of September. Soon there will be news and Newspapers. Learn about the life of the continent, about politics, about new books, too much new. Only now, when I write letter, received radio. Schooner "Chukotka" crushed by ice. Team and passengers are launched. Schooner planted in the ground. The goods loaded onto the ships. The ships are ordered to move forward. More news, in full view of the ship "Volkhov". Coming right here. Bye bye! Big kiss. Your Nicholas. I sent a letter, read, learn about me address radio Anadyr, Lawrence, and write Lawrence through Vladivostok Chukotka, send in may, June next year. Nicholas.
The Gulf Of Lawrence. Bering Strait. August 25, 1931.
9 Aug 1930года the North Cape. Arctic ocean.
Half past four came schooner "Chukotka". Miroshnichenko leaves. I'm alone. Change him not came. I still have the factor. Likely, in December attend the employee. Now complete civic participation. Life gives a new exam, you have to stand on the five plus. These months will be the most severe. Need to all muster together: will, force, health, mind and nerves. Live well. Hi the city. Bad news coming from the ocean. "Kolyma" from the island of ayona got a hole and was forced to throw away. Hopes for an exit in Vladivostok, "Kolyma" is not enough. The Americans broke the screw, will winter in Chauna or in the North. On "Kolyma" are letters to you. The boatswain with "Chukotka" broke his leg.
*Eielson – this desperate American pilot was killed, to gain merchant Swenson, freeze valuable furs on the North Cape. Once in a Blizzard, he crashed with his mechanic Borland. Our pilots M. T. Slepnev and V. A. Galyshev found the corpse of the deceased in the mouth of the river Amguema American pilot B. Eielson and brought him to Alaska.
East. Mikhail Vodopyanov. Pilot's dream "Unobtrusive idea".
So all you ice hi. In the North, all is calm, the ice are all also worth.Next year, send Newspapers, write "Izvestia" from the moment of receipt of the letter, if you send, from August. Also send "Komsomolskaya Pravda". Tell, to as during Kohl brought together all old Newspapers, which he read, except "Izvestia" and "Komsomolskaya Pravda." Send and others that you will read. I live a year later than you. Write down the writings of Plekhanov, costs 60 rubles, as the money will chamber the next round. Address the North Cape, to send in April. Address: radio Wellen, Kamchatka, and in Nizhne-Kolymsk. The North Cape. Let the brothers remember me, not before February will send a telegram, when almost no from me. Live well, don't worry. I have been provided great, gave weapons, food, money. To email address the North did not.
August 17, 1930. The North Cape.
Congratulate me on the beginning of winter. The first snow fell 4.5 cm thick. All day the snow did not melt, and now the evening has melted already. Maybe the snow will stay, but if there is sun, it will melt. In the ocean mist. Off the ice. The Northern winds blow. White geese fly from Wrangel island, the first news of the cold. Ducks have been flying for a long time. On water clear cutting lard. Off the ice. On the tundra snow. On the sky white clouds. All is quiet in the North. My last greetings to the warmth and the sun. I learned to bake bread. Came out pretty good, didn't ruin the meal. I cook everything myself: soups, the second, from the third I can only milk kissel with eggs. I'll try to make the cookies. There are almond, lemon and vanilla extracts, the vanilla is very tasty jelly. Miroshnichenko in a few days, to my amazement, returned. Was forgotten in the confusion of the book factory. Now we live together again. He's waiting for the steamer now. We have no hope for the arrival of "Kolyma".
A very heavy ice year. At the island of Iona "Kolyma" drowned, but broke stranded. Rescued by the Americans. The "Kolyma" lost screw blade in the sides of the hole ("Kolyma" from July to September 1930. wintered at Cape Shalaurova hut). The Americans have a broken screw. Bad "pynl" - (news) are ice. The first mate of the schooner "Chukotka" fell during the running overboard, he was saved by the fact that you fell on the ice. At the same time, when we were sitting he and the doctor hurried from the schooner came for the doctor. The Bosun broke his leg, broke the mast. A schooner sent to you. Maybe I'll send it away. If only the ship didn't Zasimova. I'm worried about the steamer. Already ocean began to freeze, and" Kolyma " there is no. On Cape East, near us, five lonely graves, traces of wintering 1915, 1922 and 1930. Graves from stones, the earth does not thaw. We wish everyone and the "witch" and the Americans to get out of the ice. Dimitri is a nice man, he's been in the North for 12 years. Teaching me a lot.
August 19, 1930 the North Cape.
Blowing strong South-East wind. The ice draws away from the shore. If the wind does not change will not change, we wait every day for the steamer and schooner. Maybe they'll come out. Remained until September brief. In September, the ocean will freeze. Already now there are frosts. As talked on schooner "Chukotka", Mr. Polister (?), owner of the schooner “Karise,”,thinking to spend the winter. They have broken the screw. At 8.30 in the evening. An awful wind. Above the ground fog. Ice drives from the shore. East wind - the wind for the saving of the ship. From the shores of clean water per kilometre. Most of all I feel sorry for the captain. He's a good man. When "Kolyma" dynamite punched the way behind the Cape Heart-Stone, as I suffered. Some nights the captain was asleep, not off the bridge. Starts, dark nights. White nights are over. Light mom's lamp. The light is good and gives a lot of heat. Kerosene many-barrel 20 ...? this is my I was given from the schooner "Chukotka".
Fun and songs do not stop in our house.
21st. In the evening. We're really worried about the steamer. Could crush. Nasty blow of wind drives to the shore ice. The bays are filled with ice, the ship has no place to defend itself. Everywhere the ice. The temperature falls to 0град. Fog.
22nd. Evening. All day strong up to 8 points East wind. Fog covers the ground. The ship can not go to the sea, ice and fog. Half a degree Celsius. I bought the goose with cranberries. Cranberries from Amundsen stocks. He visited the North in 1919. Dried cranberries, cooked with sugar.
23rd. Winter day! It was snowing, all covered with white snow, flying huge flocks of ducks and geese. We killed 7 geese and 20 ducks. In the evening the street is quiet for the winter.
24th. Snow. Dimitri killed the seal.

At the request Of the Committee of the North, I have the following to inform you: passing on the schooner "Chukotka" from the Chaunskaya Bay to Vladivostok, the vessel stopped, almost for a day, at the Cape of the Northern Chukotka district. Here, i.e. at the North Cape, I met a teacher so Snakenberg, as I now already know Your son. Comrade Schnakenburg is assigned to Cape North to open a native school. Quite healthy. Lives together, ie in the same house and room with the head of the factory from Dolgostroev. Miroshnichenko(by the way, who lives there 13 years). I am quite assured products of the highest quality. Such as: flour, butter, fruit fresh and canned, compote, St. vegetables and so on. Without everyones.… , these are the conditions of nutrition in the North; for my part, I can assure you that tov. Snakenberg, and will continue the same healthy way I saw it, in the middle of August. I myself have lived in this area since 1924. And because I have to assure You about the sufficiently.

Two days ago, a Russian came to us. He lived 9 years in America, worked on gold. Pulled home. He moved the Bering Strait from Alaska, landed on the Russian Bank. We live on the Russian-American border. Tells us about unemployment in America, the decline of Alaska, how Russian workers live by the same Duma about the Soviet Union. Talked about the American brew "moon-Shine" — "lunar lights" and how bootleggers during the searches the police fired at with machine guns. He's leaving on the boat soon. In the spring of June from Cape Dezhnev I saw the mountains of Alaska, interesting but alien to me country. In June, I visited a large eskimo village Nooken. He was at Cape Dezhnev-the most Eastern point of Asia. Saw before him the Bering Strait. Saw eskimo; walruses. On June 10, we walked on the ice of the Strait near the shore in Uelen. Birds shouted on the rocks. It was a "rookery", the nesting of gulls, puffins, loons. On the same day on the mountain I saw a spring flower. Lying snow still and the sea was ice. At the end of June we went to last time on the dogs. It was Spring – a never-ending day. Flying ducks and white canadian geese. The sea and the tundra was in a hurry to make up for the long winter. From the 21st of June, I live in Lawrence on kultbaza – I have a room with two Windows, a pretty good. The decor, and clean. Russians here about 20 people. In early September, I will go to the Bay of Mechigmen to "wandering". Winter will spend there. Us will two: I and cooperator. Perhaps three months will not of telegrams. April-June and the future of the chronicler in the depths of the country-telegrams will not be long. Read a lot. Study Of Marx And Engels. I write a lot. About life this winter, outlined in a letter to Klyuchevym. 3rd July came the schooner "Chukotka". I received a letter from my mother last may. 1 August came the steamer, mail for me, was not. Read the papers, saw the magazines, on the mainland there is a lot of construction. On return'm going to go on South, ' ll take a look collective farms, new factories. You old people don't understand much. 19th Aug got mail from Uelen, where in July, delivered her "Schmidt". Newspapers, magazines from December of 1930, a lot of interesting. For me letters with mainland there is no. Pass the details of the death of the schooner. 10 miles from the shore, the schooner was captured by two ice fields. In the nose there appeared a hole, after a while the ice broke the wheel and the screw. The schooner began to fill up with water. Did everyone get out on the ice, picked up the rations. Within two hours the schooner was filled with water and sank. The whole product died. One sailor died of a broken heart. One a bit collapsed, one turned gray. The head of the factorium, who went to Cape North, all things died. Remained, in than crawled out on the ice.
Lawrence Bay, Bering Strait 2 September 1931.
My dear ones! Greetings and best wishes! Five days as the storm continues and the tearing wind. It's raining with snow. Yesterday on the mountains emerged the first snow. Today, snow is spreading to other mountains. The sea in the waves. The shore gets heavy surf. The grass turns yellow and flowers fall. Before entering the Bay, they say, saw ice brought from the Northern ocean. There is a winter. The 27th came the steamer Itelmen supply. Were unloaded one day, in the evening the storm struck, and the ship left to settle into the Gulf on the other side. Brought a lot of goods – the best, even intended for export. Just many and enough. Still waiting for the steamer. He stands in Anadyr. It snowed yesterday. It is cold. Rain. Storm. Came a steamer, visited the ship. I learned the details of how the death of schooner "Chukotka". On July 27, the schooner was squeezed between the ice fields. It happened near the river Amguema in the vicinity of Cape North. Got a hole, began to penetrate the water. Closed up the hole, pumped out the water. There was a moment when the schooner was bulging on the ice. The ice pressed in harder. Broken steering wheel, broken screw. Water in the engine room. Machinists worked on the stools. Schooner bursting. Burst pipes. Warp door, one sailor closed the cabin door. He was saved by the fact that kicked the door in. In the world of flying radio. The first adopted Alaska. Just at that time, I was at Lawrence radio station. The radio operator carried the usual duty, listened to at all. We laughed with him, telling funny stories. Suddenly he accepted: "Everyone, everyone, listen only to me, the rest stop working". Schooner reported people, a hole, water holds. In this same evening in the world flew “SOS.” People went on the ice, taking food, took a gramophone. The cattle shot down. There was a time when it was impossible neither to go nor to lower the boats – melkovaty ice. Then the boat went under water. People were walking on floating hummocks to the steamship "Kolyma". Very close by the ship and the sailor died of a broken heart. Many turned white. I saw them myself. This story was told to me by a Baker from schooner. He spoke in a quiet voice as people after big shocks: "three times We were under the death." Head. trading post the Northern Cape lost all the property she and he turned white. The captain has changed a lot. Last year at Cape North I have he was drinking tea and was happy. The whole team goes on the steamer to Vladivostok. Ferries "Kolyma" and "Schmidt" probably are worn ice. The last radio was from Chauna. These are the North "panel" — news. Wrote and am sending letters. Here the letters go wrong. Radio stations are filled up with telegrams: commercial and administrative, private go last. Don't worry about me. Firmly believe in yourself, and health is beautiful. I'm starting to talk about myself all winter. However, you have perhaps still feel hot and turns green the grasses. 'I haven't seen in so long the dust the street dust. Fell into the hands of a magazine celebrating the first of may in Moscow on red square. How strange, there was no snow. We met on may 1 in Uelen, at the entrance to the ocean. Everyone was. The children are dressed for the occasion. The radio operator even wore yellow shoes. There was snow, ice and cold, only sun was shining brightly. Now about itself. For interest am to set out by number. The 3rd September was the steamship "Kolyma". Everyone said goodbye to me so well. Given two rings. We went to the shore, the steamer went East. The sea was a thin crust of ice, and it was quiet. For the first time I was gripped by melancholy, but then I quickly picked myself up. Cleaned room, cooked lunch, put bread and began to live. 6th night passed American schooner "Kariz". The fire of the schooner appeared at the Cape on the left. But, were the ice heavy multi-year ice and the Americans went into the sea. It was a fine quiet weather with frost, the sea was clean, the ice is gone below the horizon.
17th September hit a strong snow storm, and winter started. In October, it was frosty but clear weather. The sky shimmered with the fire of the Aurora Borealis. This is a very beautiful sight. In the North sky green waves, which then go out, then burn with green fire. Huge spotlights probe the skies are yellow-green light. I learned how to cook.Products I have was many: oranges, apples, cabbage, white and black bread, compote, meat, groats, eggs. There was a lot of milk, fresh potatoes. I particularly loved the milk jelly. I ate 5-6 dishes for lunch. Bread peck himself, times two botched, but then stopped working good. My only entertainment was a broken gramophone without a spring. In the evening, when I was alone, I took the gramophone in his hands, shattered the membrane is held with the left hand and finger of the right spinning disc. Listening to foxtrots, singing, sister Brooks sang about love, tenor-American tune pulled the Russian Dubinushka, records was an American. Like Russians songs, loved and known. I slept in a sleeping bag for a long time. Slept in hat, fur pants, morning breath somersalo and on the fur of the sleeping bag. I had to melt the ice for washing. The days grew shorter. Was coming in 10, 14 – it was getting dark again, three out of the moon, the concept of the world upside down. The Blizzard went on for several days, at night it was scary, and always at the bedside light was on. 22nd November the sun went down. The day started with fog, the sky rumbled, the clouds. Before that 7th of November we celebrated the day of the October revolution. I am reminded of Moscow and Zales. From the 1st to the 13th of December was the strongest Blizzard. The wind tore the roof, easy marshmallows wafted through the room. You couldn't keep it warm. I had a lack of coal, and now he was on fire, put oil, but had a burst pipe. In the oven went the boxes. In the morning we had to light a lamp, there was darkness. The Windows have been covered with ice since the beginning of winter. In the corners of ice and snow. The corridor filled up, the coal filled up. This was the sheer madness of snow, wind and cold. I made lunch, played on the gramophone, reading and writing. Life passed like a dream. At the same time, received the news that shattered the American schooner "Elsif" looted the former Russian merchants, the schooner crashed in the spring of 1929goda at Cape Billings in the ice and was thrown out on a Bank in the lurch. The authorities have not yet reached it, in General, there were no authorities in the area. These same Russians sent the letter, I kept it:"we lost count of days, we don't know what number and what month, it is very boring without calendar, send, we will pay". I wrote to them the day and month and however strictly asked to stop the plundering of the schooner. "The chief of militia has already left Wellen. He knows everything." When Mallenom did not exist long ago. The population was harvesting Arctic foxes. I opened the trading post at your own risk, and started trading. It was in the half of November. On the 31st of December arrived, the staff Rick – instructor. They confirmed the correctness of the trade. We took food from "Stavropol" (the steamer, which wintered at Cape North in 1929 1930году) and distributed among the population. Met the New year with alcohol and laughter. 15th of January was cold, the thermometer showed-35град. below 0, but it was quiet and clear. On 16 January the Russian left to the breeders for the chown. 20th the sun came out – a little edge appeared above the mountains. 21st January, I fell ill two days was almost without memory. I only asked Chukchi to heat it up so it was warm. The wood was demolished the old house. Two days later I got up but was weak. Days were added, the sun shone, again there was a Blizzard. 27th January evening, it was silent outside, suddenly I heard a cautious shuffling footsteps behind the wall and after a minute the screams. I got dressed, grabbed Winchester, and ran out of the house. It turned out, a neighbor came the polar bear, dismantled the tent and took the dog. The bear ran away. A couple of times in the village came polar bears. This year in General was a bear. Bears in or out on the beach, looked at the village. In the nearby village bear ate a young guy, having met him on the road. There were few Arctic foxes. A few days later arrived Pyotr Bryukhanov – arrested in the case of plundering schooner. One of the interesting moments of life in the North: the former merchant, the old polar wolf – 22 years of life in the North – old Bryukhanov followed the stage without any guides, on his own dogs, it is at a distance of 800 kilometers to the authorities. After a few days in my house happened the following: there were three of us, two Chukchi me, was night and we were drinking tea. Outside the sound of footsteps, then quiet. Chukchi suddenly were shaking from of fear. I wanted to get dressed and picked up the hard drive. They clung to me and didn't want to let go. I got back to the table and set the rifle down. At the same moment, Chuckcha grabbed Winchester, pulled the trigger and wanted to shoot. I snatched the Winchester from him. Chukchi screamed and ran out into the cold corridor. With him occurred ........?
Bay of Lawrence September 27, 1931 Chukotka.
My dear father! Two days ago, ice came to the Bay, and today the radio brought bad news. Ice and radio brought bad news. The steamer could not pass and is now in the Bay of Providence. No coal will be delivered. It may be a difficult winter. There's not enough coal. Perhaps I will not live in a special warmth. But it's nothing where we have not disappeared and will not disappear! I am sending a letter with a boat, which is now leaving the Bay of Providence, taking passengers. Workers leaving the mining expedition. Perhaps, in this winter here will fly planes. Write me letters through Osoaviakhim – Moscow, or the organization that will send planes. Write and in the name of pilots, do not hesitate. Write, of course, a substantial, not cluttering plus. The last news from my mother was in the half of June-a telegram from Chelyabinsk, it's been three and a half months, but I'm not worried. Now a lot of work on radio stations and private telegrams may be somewhere. Still twice a month I will try to tell about yourself. From January to may I leave for a large flight on the inside of Chukotka – Lawrence – Chaun to survey the "nomadic". In this part, almost no one was and I will be in the top five, and perhaps for the first time. I think to make the trip to the deer avoiding the usual transport dogs. Maybe I will organize a cinema expedition. Bye. Optimal. Nicholas.
Emma Bay-Provideniya Southeastern part of the Chukchi Peninsula on October 4, 1931.
This letter applies to all of my loved ones, who will read it. This is the last letter I'll send to the mainland this year. 27th September sent a letter to the Pope on the address of Pereslavl. 7 th September sent all, all many letters. The post office was handed here in Providence, and I sent it myself on a sealed boat in Lawrence. The steamer did not come to Lawrence because of the ice. We were left without coal. Now, thanks to the efforts, the ship was returned, we expect it tomorrow-let's go to Lawrence again. The weather is bad – snow with rain. In Lawrence the ice. I'm going with the survey of the fisheries of the South-Eastern part of the district. Have known kind of surgery is rocking on the waves, landing on the shore in the surf, the cold, the snow is not the little things that need to be removed from the road so as not prevented. We arrived by boat from Lawrence 2nd of October. Was ice. There was fog and rain. The wind and pitching. Driving: head Marsicanus. expedition – Ivan – biologist – researcher, staff captain in the past, graduated in 1923 the Military Academy, krasnoznamenets, simpleton - man; T. S. – Secretary of the District party Committee – graduated from Combos. The party was sent to work in the North, a good Bolshevik. Travin-a tourist traveling around the world by bike, walking from Murmansk to Wellen.Comrade R. minder; the Chukchi Volkwagen – tie and, finally, I'm Nicholas, Snakenberg – "Ivan Bunakov", known for skillfully destany tank alcohol younger companions, remaining at the base. In Providence I learned the news. Killed be repaired – drowned in the river upside – down by the wind. A long time could not sleep. He was a very clever man, but too intelligent. I'll send a telegram from the ship to Anadyr. I received a letter from him in early September, sent him too. Well, you have to be firm, survive this. I read the papers that night for almost a year. Told in the morning that I talk in my sleep. This is the first time in recent months. Today slept quietly. It's okay. I was firm and vigorous. It's good. There is so keep on winter. I'll be back in Lawrence by October 25th. Then go a second time to detour down atomage area. In January, heading North to Chauna. Probably, on internal part of the area on" wandering", on deer. I use my little experience in the North. I will go without a guide and European food. Cooked cocoa-sugar-butter-milk in the form of tablets. Then the meat is venison. Probably, news won't be till may-July.
Lawrence, Chukotka, the 4th of September.
Dear relatives! This at night again went ice. Blowing North-West wind. The ice and the ice ship "Ashing" on view in the ice. "Ashing" carries coal. Outside the Windows the rain and the wind, in the Gulf storm. All is well. I received a telegram from uncle Serezha yesterday, thank you. The answer to it I send in this letter. We have late autumn. On the mountains at night had a chance snow. Sometimes the sun. The grass turned yellow. Go wind. The whole of August in the Gulf was ice. 8 th appeared first on ice and since then almost not come out of the Bay. This year is a very difficult, very icy year. 30 August returned from wintering from the North the steamer "Lieutenant Schmidt". He visited us a little and went South to the warmth and sun, where they stood from October to August. The two will forever remain in the rocks of the Cape Cape. Scurvy. On "Kolyma" shot the third. Wintered two ships. In March there was a letter that the third part of the command sick with scurvy, this has never happened. Then all recovered, only remained three. We also had scurvy, suffered five people, but all went well, nobody died. Andagi village (12 km from Lawrence). Yesterday evening arrived on whaling ships here. Go into the Bay Mechigmen to the reindeer Chukchi at the autumn exchange. Every autumn there is a trade exchange between" coastal " and deer. First taking the fat of the seal, belts, skins of the bearded seal (seal rocks); deer give in exchange for reindeer meat, sinews of reindeer, reindeer skins. The cooperative acts with goods. I'm going to study and account for this exchange. We also need to bring cultural services. We'll have a tundra fist in front of us. Let's go into the Gulf of Mechigmen, the banks which are not marked on the map. Will yaranga Chukchi reindeer, can still be quite distinctive. In 1930, they put a Red yaranga – item-trade — co-op and school. Yaranga is in the open, the winds blow, the mountains around. Reindeer herders camp is 20-30 kilometers away. In yaranga works my friend Yu. M., with him lives Minenko, a man who passed the South and North America and finally dropped anchor in Chukotka, he is an interpreter and a dog rider. With him, eskimo ANTO, who knew four languages, swam on schooners in Seattle. T. B. will conduct cooperative work among olenevodov; four of them, the Komsomol and a member of the party and two independent councillors. Over Yaranga wind wave red flag, it is visible from afar. In the tundra the beginning of the cause of Lenin, but in the tundra even kulaks and shamans subversive. Fists exploit the poor. But very soon the red flag will develop even more. Organized the farm, the poor went from fists, it's the first farm, but there will be more and more. In winter, the esteemed Dr. Theodore E. cured the broken leg of the Chukchi. Theodore E. this placed the herders and had the reputation of a "strong Russian shaman". The young man was already sentenced to death. It happens here: when there is no way out for a sick person, he is strangled with a belt. In the North it is accepted. In the winter I came to this country reindeer Chukchi. We got into a camp that hasn't seen the whites yet. Once upon a time there was driving one of the old predators the traffickers. But we were greeted well. We held elections of Council, the Soviet power was established. Then I went to the beach in places that are not on the map. He walked day and night, it was in January in 50 degree weather. Then they came out, all this time I was eating raw deer meat, it was so cold that pieces of meat stuck to the sky. This was a very difficult exit, but for my happiness there was no Blizzard. I went to the Bay of the Rudder in the South of Chukotka. Then in the Bay of Transfiguration, together with the head of the factor, we started a gramophone, listened to the foxtrots and songs of Ada Jonon, we really wanted to hear something of his native. Outside the window was a Blizzard and the frost. Now reopen the country Chaochuan which is already waving the red flag. We were ice yesterday. Now a storm on the sea, ice and wind. YM went on. I'm late, I'll go to Lawrence in a few hours. This is the same way Zinaida Richter wrote in the white spot book, she has a Chapter on the boat across the ocean. We've done this way, maybe six times. Each of us was doing what would not find the words to write Zinaida Rikhter, not at all proud of. At night and now eight-ball NordWest, the sea is full of ice. But the boat must go, for it is the Soviet case. Will the wind, the rolling, the spray will settle the bitter sea a touch on the lips, on the cheeks on the face. Sokolov will have a Cup of tea in the evening return back. Letters will pass to Sokolov. The steamer stands in the ice very close, but the entrance to the Bay is clogged. Yesterday, the Chairman said,"Yes, I am the Chairman, but what to do, the ice is stronger than me." But the wind is stronger than the ice and it will steal the ice. The steamer yesterday the sting of the ice, but he's not leaving. Wrangel the steamer was damaged and drifting in the ice, these are the latest news. 22 Jun flew David Bortin Krasinski .....? They sat in Wellen. Their goal is to find a way in the ice ships Kolyma voyage. They've flown many times before. This year is very difficult – ice and ice. Today a strong storm. Ice drives out of the Bay. The coal miner stands in the ice. That is all right. I'm alive and well. Letters last year and this year received from mothers, and may letter. Went a little, only three months. The other day I received a telegram from uncle Serezha. I'll come next year. Don't worry about me, don't disappear. Family Varennikov died destiny. I've seen too much and I have a hard heart – excuse me, but it's true. But I became a strong salted guy, always cheerful and never discouraging. I firmly hope to come back and see you. When you receive this letter, we will have winter. Your Nicholas.
Wellen, Chukotka, August 2, 1933.
Dear grandmother and mother! I want the letter to get just to the 1st of October, the day of your name day. This letter will go somewhat unusual way, namely, by air. Tomorrow leaves the plane "USSR-H8" under the command of the pilot Levonevsky*. He'll take the letter. They'll go along all the North-Eastern Siberian Arctic coast to the Kolyma, Lena river, the Lena river to Irkutsk. You will learn about this flight from the Newspapers. I sent you two letters already, this is the third, two went by steamship through Vladivostok, it will go by air through Irkutsk. See their path on the map. The plane arrived on 29th of July, directly from America (Alaska). Where they took the American Mattern, who made a round-the-world flight and crashed the car under Anadyr. Told a lot of interesting things about America. The pilots live with us in the same room. Nice guys. They just have a heroic flight. They fly from Sevastopol, the whole of Siberia for them. In the sea of Okhotsk they were caught by a storm and fog. Slightly-slightly not swooped in on rock in fog. From Anadyr they flew across the Bering sea to Alaska. The 26th we received a radio from Anadyr to Nome (Alaska), where he was asked about the fate of the aircraft. It turns out the plane on the way back sat on some lake for four days, going down due to fog. Read Alaskan Newspapers from July. Much has been written about pilot Matterne and flights. Very interesting. Some great spiritual person-the American Archbishop even prayed for good weather during the round-the-world flight. Until what reach people! The pilots were told many interesting things about Mattern.... Steamers coming from the Kolyma, are still in heavy ice. Many expect to leave by boat. Our shift is still on the way. Just out of Vladivostok. The number to...?.. will be here. We'll go out late and come in the fall. Again you will not see summer. Here the summer goes. The night is dark and cold. Still wearing a winter jacket, it isn't so cold, but not hot. They say that the heat was strong in June in Khabarovsk. Have us lay still snow in June. This winter was very difficult – all the houses carried. Happened and so that you will Wake up and in the room it is dark, brought a window, you will be dressed to leave, you look, the door does not open. I have to go through the attic. Remember the number of the 8th of April and on the 20th muzzle such a Blizzard that was afraid to come out. The house is swept out and covered with snow. Against the wind was hard going. Some houses were twisted pipes (iron). Also the 6th of November for the holiday was horrible, the wind was knocking us down. I barely made it home. In General, if you get used to it, everything is fine.
* Pilot Sigismund Levonevsky (1902-1937) – the legendary polar pilot, cavalier of the Golden Star Of the hero of the Soviet Union (1934), Stalin's favorite, Stalin's Falcon. The crew of the S. Levaneuski, trying to make the world's first commercial flight over the North pole to America in August 1937, disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
One of my companions will soon go to the tundra for political and educational work. It will be cut off from Russians throughout the winter until June. This is somewhat worse, because this is the second time for him. Yes, now the sea is foggy. Rather cold. All this is nothing. Behind four years of the Blizzard, the winds, the frost and ice of the North. Khabarovsk, Moscow and Leningrad are ahead. At the end of October hope to see. There's only three months left. Greetings all-all! Nicholas.

October 27 " sea of Japan "n/a"One-Shing"("Ashing").
Dear mommy! Tomorrow Vladivostok, solid land! Behind four seas and part of the Pacific ocean! Passed 3200 miles or 5920 kilometres of the sea. On the road only a month and 24 days. In the end, it remains 10 days by train or about 9,000 kilometers of the railway – it is not so much. Now so happily and well. On the horizon, the earth is Primorye. The sea of Okhotsk is quiet and peaceful. The whole day was Sunny and warm. After all, the North has winter and the cold. Yesterday evening was held in Japan. The island of Hokkaido, and the Strait of La Perouse. On the shore was to be seen many lights of the village. Filled with electricity. Were met by three steamers today – five all day without shores far away and only seemed to land. Beautiful weather. In the afternoon, in the hour, we met polarity flooded the boat with a broken mast. This is a Japanese schooner. The people on it were not. Who knows what happened here. One thing is clear: the schooner died in the cyclone from which we came out safely. It was all three days ago. I remind you these days. We went to the sea of Okhotsk-this is the most turbulent sea in the far East. Our course lay to the island. The night of the 24th I was woken by the pounding waves. The window fought of a wave. Storm. Dawn, I climbed to the top. A huge green mountain of water suddenly rose over the steamer. The wave hit the Board and scattered on the deck. The boat fell to the side, winced, and fell back on the other side. I had to hold on to. Mountains water were on the sea. How small the steamer seemed. The nose digs into the water. The water flows over the deck. The roar of waves and ominous howl of wind. It's hard to say what happened to the passengers. The moans and cries. Puke by itself. We lie on our beds and hold tight so as not to fall. Fly boxes and suitcases, dishes falls. Bank. The evening was quiet. It was a cyclone that originated somewhere in Shanghai. The wind reached 8 points. Something creepy. In the evening the barometer fell again. The radio took a summary of the second cyclone, it was coming at us. Night again rattled wave. Strange pitching. Whole body jumping on the bed, it is necessary to keep not to fall. Dawn. On the sea trek water mountains. Waves on the deck. The roll is 38 degrees and 45 limit, after which the ship is not rectified. We're lying till lunch. We go to lunch. It is necessary to wait a moment and have time to run to avoid being swept by the wave. The dishes jump on the table. The dishes jump on the table. The boat would heave – stands against the waves, then flies up upwards, the nose digs into the water. We go to Sakhalin, changing course. All day the 25th, pass about 35 miles, whereas the usual course is 10 miles per hour. The wind reaches 9 points. Very creepy. On the evening from Tokyo adopted summary: "Typhoon passes." At night, the wind ceased. The next morning the sun was out. Today we met a half-whipped Japanese schooner, but yesterday we lowered a corpse into the sea, one old woman could not stand the storm. Are the sea storm....
October 28th, Peter the Great Bay sea of Japan.
Dear mother! In four hours we will be in Vladivostok. We'll go ashore tomorrow. The sea accompanies us with excitement and wind. But it's not cyclones anymore. In the evening we will be in Vladivostok. I'm alive and well. Feel fine. Behind the sea journey of about 6,000 miles, 54 day sailing. That is all right. I'll stay in Khabarovsk. The 10th will go to Moscow. I'll go by Express. All right, good-bye. Nicholas. The 29th landed safely in Vladivostok. Everything's fine.
On the way we took the radio from Khabarovsk, but only irregularly and I do not know what is being done now in the white light. But stories replaced us with the latest news. In particular, the staff of our expedition shared their memories from many trips. Our expedition represents the whole Arctic. Each of the employees has been somewhere. There were people from the Kola Peninsula, from the New Land, from the land of Franz Josef, from the Ob, from Yakutia, and finally I passed along and across the Chukchi Peninsula. Each of us told something interesting....In Petropavlovsk I hope to get a radio from you. Of course, I'll send a telegram myself. I'm telling you the letter's due date. Send me an email at the address: the Kamchatka Peninsula. Petropavlovsk. Mail. On demand. Not later than 1 September. In Vladivostok also send a letter of 25 September and 1o October – urgent, but not air (hastily goes from Leningrad 8-10 days; air – 20 days). I think, 15th October, we'll be on the way back. My address on the radio will be Kamchatka. The apuka, me. We will go to the mountains, and therefore I will not let myself know for a long time. As soon as Alyosha arrives at the Institute, send me a telegram. I finish writing. We wish good luck to our steamer "Stalingrad", which will pass through the Arctic flight Vladivostok - London, the Northern sea route. I wish success and health to all of you. Andrew needs to learn. I ask him not to drop out. I still have the sea and the white spots Koreckogo range. Your son and brother Nicholas.

Lawrence Bay, Chukotka. August 11, 1933.
Hello, Auntie Cap! This is the fourth letter to you. The third was from the 2nd, I wrote to you from Whalen. A letter sent with the pilots of the aircraft "USSR –H8" They came to us in Whalen from America, which was delivered Mattern – American to circumnavigate the world flights. You probably know that story from the papers. The letter will fly over the ice of the polar sea, will be on Wrangel, then go down the Lena river to Yakutsk, Irkutsk. It'll come to you if the plane doesn't crash somewhere. We lived with the pilots in Whelen in the same room. Nice people! In the evenings we got together, and then everyone was telling funny stories from his life. This letter will go on "Suchan", we expect it today or tomorrow. He spent the winter in Chaunskaya Guba. At the end of July, sometimes the radio threw a short message "in the ice, North-West of the island Shalaurova", "Suchan" stood in the ice. Then some day brought the news that" Suchan " moved and went ten miles. The steamer was waiting in the Whalen looks. My companions for many days as missed. Now the ship had broken the ice and will be here soon. It will take this letter, for the calculation you will get it at the end of September. In the end, it is not so long – a month and a half. Our steamer is coming from the South, somewhere near Petropavlovsk, should come to us at the end of August. All is well. Good year. The ice won't come until the end of September. Then I will already go South to the warm sun, I will swing on the waves of the Pacific ocean. My aunt-aunt, it was given me to see much, and I am very grateful for this life. To me now 26 years old, healthy, hard salty wind and the sun. Many of my peers on the mainland are already married. I live alone. I don't think I'm getting married. Maybe it's very bad. Now is the summer. At night chilly, freeze. These days there was a strong storm. It's coming to fall. The snow in some places and lies. The summer passes. Never see heat. They say in June in Khabarovsk there was a strong heat. We still have snow laying around. It was cold. This winter again brought above the Windows. Wake up in the morning, it's dark in the room. Outside the Blizzard. The window is above the top. Need to dig out. Such is winter in the North. It's safe, aunt. I'll see you in November for sure. I received a telegram from you at the end of July. I don't know what's wrong with mom and brothers. For the whole winter this is the second telegram from you. You think I'm dead, too, and I'm alive and well. After all, we are cut off from everything in the winter. Snowstorm and Blizzard! You did not see them and do not know these Chukchi winds. I'll tell you later. The 12th in the evening. A violent storm at sea. Wind. It is cold. For example the white nights. Now it is dark and cold as well as late autumn in Moscow. The boat is in the Dezhnev. Soon will and have us. Maybe the mail will come. Apart from that all is well. A night storm dumped Kawasaki (mercocidades motor vessel). 13th afternoon. Severe storm. In the morning came the ship "Okhotsk". Came two old known. Tell a lot of interesting things about the mainland. Our steamer will be here in ten days. That is all right. Hi everyone. Again storm, waves of, but the sun and feel hot. I'm sending a letter with Okhotsk. A radio, Suchan, again, is in the ice between Cape North and Venceremos. Familiar place. Low sad shore. On 200 kilometers there is no housing and people. On the horizon mountains, tundra. The sea ice. On dogs way of Vankarem to the North for three days. Georgy on Vankarem, head. Factor, soul-man. He goes to the mainland. In those places we walked in June last year, on foot. Will tell about it. For the rest everything is fine. The steamer hooted a drawling tone and what could be happier ship's horn! Last year I saw the steamer on September 3rd. Everything. I'll go soon. Nick.
Khabarovsk. November 6th, 1933.
Dear mother and brothers! I already in Khabarovsk, behind 7 100,000 kilometers. Yesterday arrived here by Express train. Stopped at a friend's – associate Professor of biology at the Medical school. Got your letter, and two letters of Alexis. Thank you very much, and happy to read about you. I'm alive and well. Feel good. Just a little cold-it always happens. In June last year, I failed in the North polar sea under the ice, only one day eight times, and then nothing. Come to Vladivostok, from all of us, without exception, took a cold, bacteria very little, or not at all.
Alex taking a gift of a shotgun 16 gauge – Tula – almost new. He writes a little about myself, well, nothing, come, we'll talk. How to call in Chelyabinsk, whether directly from Khabarovsk or Moscow – to say can't right now. I will be in Chelyabinsk necessary. I think, mom, this winter you're staying with me. I'll find an apartment, and you'll come to Leningrad. In General, I'll see you soon. About material not worry, I have several thousands of money – live well. In addition, I will receive a scholarship, there will be other earnings. Now money has become expensive in the centers. Clothing, underwear, too, can get in Moscow, through the Committee of the North, it is very simple. I'm glad to hear you're all healthy. Now before the meeting has left days. Soon, I'll see you soon. Business keeps me here. Now three days of a holiday-establishments don't work. Now in including Northern workers and I take an interest in. Was in a series of scientific institutions. Met with the Chief Directorate of the Northern sea route, with Commissioner RICK. They provided me assistance in the purchase of a ticket. It was difficult to get a ticket, a lot of departing from Vladivostok! I'll go to Moscow, probably in an Express. In General, this issue is not resolved – where to go first, it does not depend on me. Be glad I came back happily from the North. Be repaired left there. Because I had several moments when we could have stayed there forever. On days received radio from Uelen – died Secretary RICK.and a young boy. He arrived only in July. I know him very well. Wish! My health is strong. Health is good. I did the work, the plans were justified, the trust Of the Committee of the North was justified. All this was achieved at the cost of great hardship, but nothing (...illegible.?.....), the words of Karl Marx: "In science there is no broad high road, and only one can expect to reach her shining peaks, who without fear, climbing the narrow rocky trails". That's all she wrote. Nicholas.
June 4, 1935.
Dear mother! Write to the station, bid farewell to a comrade. He's going to Schmidt's Cape for a couple years -- he's a meteorologist, we winter in Lavrentia together. Somehow it is a pity to see a man for 16 thousand kilometers! Of course, we all hope he comes back. Very many of my friends are leaving. Who on Dixon, who far. According to our latest news on the Bear Islands polar bears ate two observers. One of them was a good friend of mine. Next year, maybe I will. I found your card and my answer. Write to me in. Now doing that, preparing the test. Will soon go again with kukhlyanki, they gave me cheap, I didn't. I will try to do everything that is possible from me. Hey. Nikolaй.
28-Y1-35 years. Tula.
Dear brothers Alex and Andrew! Only now, when the excitement of the past days subsided a little, I write you a letter. Of course, very, very a pity so sooner dead of our father, but that same to do, such is fate and the end of the his difficult life. I passed the last exam on the 21st night at eight o'clock. At 10 am went to the station, I thought to get to the Express. The ticket I have was taken on the 25th, I left it (from Leningrad very hard to go), stood in line and easily got a ticket for "arrow". In the morning I was in Moscow and 1 hour 3O visited dad. He was already very bad and unconscious. In three, at night, he died. On the 25th morning we buried him in a German cemetery, 44 block away. All this was hard for me, and I went to Tula to Believe, talk and talk. It has now become easier. We left with a mother now and it is our duty to provide her a peaceful old age. Of course, we will make every effort to make her life calm and good. I don't know yet where it will be better to live as she wants. I'm gonna help her with the money anyway. The doctrine I finished, although still a diploma. I think to finish it by autumn - at the beginning of winter. I will probably enroll in the Academy of Sciences for graduate students: i.e. to prepare for the Professor of history and Economics of the North. The matter is now resolved. We must prepare, as I return, for the entrance exam on dialectical imperialism and philosophy. These things I worked and I think, will sustain. That's how my business works. In General, all well. Material – the scholarship of three hundred rubles, but you can look for jobs. In September, maybe in August, you will. Perhaps, I will go to prepare for you, it is still difficult to tell now. Don't you think, Alyosha, to visit Leningrad? Think about it. Of course, if you have a ticket, you will first go to the holiday home. Like Andrew, when he comes, thinking where to Park? He seemed to study well – so be it. I think he should go to the College, whatever he wants. Write. How's the call coming? Waiting for your letter. Your brother Nicholas.
20 – 06 – 1936 Oh. Leningrad.
Dear mother! I got your card last night about coming to Moscow. Of course, very glad of your departure: there will be a lot better. Rest, calm down, talk to your family. Let uncle Kolya (Nikolay Pavlovich Sass, a teacher of mathematics and English at Moscow state University) go for a walk with you. Go again nemaska river. The main thing is not to worry and keep yourself calm. Remember, I'll be happy to receive you. Remember that my apartment is always open for you. Generally, in any of the huts with Andrew I won't let you. This is very clear, and does not require any additions. Andrew is not small, he is able to live a quite live one. A few days you rest, and then, when the impression will come in order, write me most detailed letter with the indication just. At one time, when Engels was asked, " what will happen to the peasants after the revolution?"he replied,' Let him think of his piece of land.' So let the "Distant contemporary come to his senses". Naive ideas will disappear, and then he will turn the case. I'll get pay by the end of the month, and I'll send you the money. It also does not require much explanation. So the number to 26th waiting for a letter from you, very detailed. My greetings to all. Hey, Yo.Um... How does Margarita Robertovna live, aunt Olya? Your son Nicholas.
P. S. I Now a lot of urgent work for S. V. Obrucheva*. The Arctic Institute is preparing a Collection of minerals in the Arctic. I edit and correct geographical names of the fields in Chukotka to the North. This is a significant work in size, requires great accuracy and correctness, as well as in foreign languages. In addition, we must also "bark" of one writer, who created "the Northern novel": the creepy stuff mixed with naivety and polar illiteracy. Nicholas.
The retreat: "With a heartache remember the young and talented scholar N. B. Snakenberg, who died a heroic death at the beginning of the great Patriotic war, defending Leningrad. He first met nimw in 1930 at Cape Schmidt. In 1934 he gave us a number of lessons of the Chukchi language. They were prosmotrela the first version of my manuscript and made valuable comments about the language and way of life of the Chukchi, which he knew because he lived a few years in Chukotka. Sergey Obruchev "and mountain tundras of Chukotka" Chukotka expedition 1934-1935гг. S. V. Obruchev (*1891 -+1965) - prominent Soviet scientist, famous geologist, academician, son of the famous traveler, scientist and science fiction writer V. A. Obruchev.
21st June 1937 Vladivostok.
I'll send you a telegram tomorrow, and now I'm writing about my life. You're probably worried about being silent for so long, but that was your reason. Deal in is, that our departure lasted and only now became known, that we shall go on to/ ' s "Stalingrad." The number of the 28th, I'll probably be already at sea when you get my letter. I am quite alive, healthy and feel good. I live in a Dorm. Lunch in the dining room in the morning and in the evening eat food expedition. Yesterday was the Chinese theatre. Saw three plays in one evening. In General at the Chinese theatre I for the third time. Are going now in the Korean theater. In General, while there is no special news, although you have to go to institutions and we're not loaded with work. If we leave after June 28th, then on July 8th we will be in Petropavlovsk, and the number of the 15th in Natalie Bay-the base of our expedition. Natalie Bay is known to me in 1933, we stood here for a couple of days, returning from the North. Probably will in the Bay of Korfa, where I was in the 1929-1930s. Soon radio will miles in the 200's, but in the Bay and Natalie are radio fish plant associated with the radio station in Apuka. We'll be connected to the world in this way, but that doesn't mean I'll be so easy to connect to. I'm often in the trails, go in the mountains far from the Coast. In any case, I will try to keep in touch with myself. The radio in the Apuka belongs Narkompochtel and she needs to accept telegrams. If for some reason the Telegraph will answer that such a station there, then call Olyutorka (Aleutica) are one and the same. Anyway, my address for the radio is: "Kamchatka Apuka me."Perhaps this place is also known as Ust ' -Apuka. Somewhat further to the North of us is the radio station of the Northern sea route Cape Navarin. It is possible that I will use this station as well. Take a map and find the Eastern shore of Kamchatka, to the North of the Bay of Korfa is Cape Olutorsky, and to the North of its Bay, Deep Bay, Natalia, Ilpi, Vatyna, Uterus-Pilihan. All these places of our work. I firmly believe that everything will be fine, and in the fall I will see all of you again. Being in Chelyabinsk, I heard from you, my dear, you said that "nobody needs me". I believe such things to speak more need not. We'll all help you as much as possible. I'm doing everything I can for my part. About you and now I think a lot, but you never think of me as a proud man. My stay with you was brief, but I could no longer and arrived on time. I barely managed to sit down in Sverdlovsk. Here in the expedition I keep myself very strictly. Discipline, we have delivered well. I promised myself not to eat extra. With this I will be in Kamchatka. Our people are exceptionally good and friendly. We have somewhat failed the deadline for departure, but it is not terrible. If you receive this letter of the 1st, now just give a telegram to Petropavlovsk, demand, we'll be there 5-6 July. I will write a letter to the brothers before leaving. Today, on the day of my father's death, I ask you to remember once again that we all, individually, care and will take care of you. Bye, all the best. Nikolay, your loving son.
11th July 1937 Petropavlovsk on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
Dear mother! Vladivostok – Kamchatka crossing was successfully completed. Today at 11 o'clock in the morning arrived in the Peter and Paul Bay. While standing on the RAID and soon come to the pier. Our 9-day sailing on the ocean ended, ahead of a very small transition-four days to the place of our landing in the Deep Bay. This transition was quite calm and only once the fresh wind blew off the coast of Japan. Greatly retarded our voyage a thick fog with no visibility. Steamer all the time gave the horns to avoid collision. Yesterday the whole day was along the coast of southern Kamchatka. Morning seemed a light mist and the air the outlines of the mountains. They grew up, clearing up, and turned into high, snow-covered hills. Amazing beauty: clear blue sky, Pacific ocean perfectly calm, and huge mountain peaks in the snow. At night, the steamer was on the smooth surface of the water, the wind had completely stopped. Waves that scattered the nose of the ship, shimmered with green and white fire – it was the glow of the water. A wide glowing road remained behind the steamer.....
We were at sea for nine days. Came from Vladivostok on the night of the 3rd of July. Immediately fell in a thick and creepy fog. The third day the sun came out, we walked along the coast of Primorye. Towards came across fishing fleets-the sea of Japan was revived. The fourth was without shores, heading for Japan. Again, there was fog and wind. The fifth passed the coast of Japan and the Tsugaru Strait out into the Pacific ocean. This Strait lies between the two Japanese Islands of Hokkaido and Honshu, in Northern Japan. Look at the map of my path. We passed the sea of Okhotsk, as there was raging a storm, and we were towed a small boat "the man". Then we followed the ocean along the Kuril Islands for four days and almost always in the fog. Now there was a small transition to the Bay Deep. All I will do from Leningrad to the Bay Deep about fourteen thousand kilometers. Distance in time, we now have 8hours. This is again my long journey. The ice is very heavy. Steamers "Kolyma" and "Schmidt" came to the Cape North three miles. They do not go on. They're asking for a way back. In the North winter is coming, only 15 days are left. On Wrangel island there is a boat "Loon", but I think that will not happen. In Whalen is Itelmen — ship supply. Yesterday came here Georgy Sokolov, head of the base, will work well. On the map view, Kalugino, Mechigmen, and Transformation – in the back area I'll be in this winter. Nothing special except for sub-zero temperatures up to — 35, and possibleway Blizzard, and a little dark, the rest is cake. Let's be friends – get together. My dear mother, you wanted me to be a good son. Would be very close, often visited the house. But your son remained so disembodied that he thinks little of a clean table with a samovar, of a movie session, of the bright comfort of a "family nest". Forgive the mother of his great dissolute son, who is sick with love for the polar ice and the cold Arctic sun. Dissolute big son will soon hear howling Blizzard, laughing in spite of wind and ice. No way in hell, we will win!!! The impotent son still thinks a lot about his old mother . May the mother forgive a wayward son for years gone by boyish daring, exuberant time of mischief, the son thinks about this a lot, haven't forgotten anything. Dissolute son promises for it to live in great friendship with the brothers, let the mother again to remind them. Yes, live, firmly and fun, so will to live and your son.
The North Cape on the shore of the Arctic ocean, Chukotka, the 2nd of August.
My distant Arctic hi everyone! Yes, Hello Arctic cold for early morning snow that has lain on the mountains before noon and just over a week at the shore. The Windows are ice. There was only one Sunny day, the day my foot got bogged down in the sea sand of the North Cape. It was the 25th of July. I left a lot of letters to you and friends on the boat. Coming soon "Kolyma" , returning to Vladivostok, and from her letters, those and others will come together. So I far from ......?!. Directly to the North of the ice and Wrangel island in 180 kilometers. To the East Chukchi villages and Chaun, where two more Russian-Factoria. To the South of the mountains and the herders. Here, too, two Russians: I and zav.factor Miroshnichenko, another 60 Chukchi people, that's the whole village. Polar summer is coming to an end, flowers are already falling down, in September the cold will begin, the Factoria stands on the shore. From morning to evening in front of the Windows are ice. North-West wind caught from ocean, mountains of it. Probably "Kolyma" somewhere pressed to the shore, if she did not have time to go to Nizhne — Kolymsk. First of all, provided above does not know what. You can't eat. In the morning, fry potatoes with venison from Washington state. Drink tea: Lipton " sFinestTeaCanadaToronto (the Best Lipton tea Canada Toronto). The water is heated the ice from the ocean. Bread of pure white flour (SeatleWashington), with Brother sJerseyCreameryButter–SeatleWashington. The put sugar in your tea “SeeIs.land." Western JungarRefinery. San Francisco. Wonderful cane sugar. Condensed milk from Chicago, is also a great tasty. For lunch, cook venison soup with potatoes from Washington state with tomato from Seattle. Second ham and eggs. Eggs: DriedEggsSan-Francisco - San Francisco dry eggs. Nitrate oranges изLos-AngelesCalifornia, and on the fourth cigarettes “Chesterfield California and Myers Tobacco Company of California. American plate mark “DudleyCo” we have to rekindle the American coal. Matches are of two types. Real Swedish and American with the inscription-madeinU.S. U. ByAmericanWormersofAmericanClimate-made in America by American workers of American material for the American climate.Eat on American plates, American spoons and forks. Nothing Russian, even boring without black bread, native "Rossiyskogo". Apples and oranges eat every day, there is a reserve for the whole winter. Oranges cost 10 cents, you can buy them at the factory. There are potatoes, 13 boxes, selected and large, which are perfectly preserved from last year. There are fresh eggs. The Americans have a wonderful package, each egg in its nest, eggs do not deteriorate for two years. Dry eggs even more. Dry eggs is a dried yolk, it is bred in milk, and the eggs are obtained. A lot of milk. Orange will be enough for the whole winter. Canned fruits and flour will get more. We are waiting for the days of Americans. But a complete dependence of our American house from all over the world. There's not even a radio nearby. Nothing, no reports, no Newspapers, no rumors. Are only the ice, but the wind is howling and howling. At nine in the evening the temperature fell to 0 deg. and the water in the barrel started to freeze. Summer is a month over, if you count that it's summer. In the tundra, many colors, blue and white, but they are very small, barely raised from the ground. On earth creeps creeping willow, more like a plant than a tree. On the mountains of non-melted snow. On the shore of stones, gray granite. Live cheerfully, as always, and a fun look at ice, this ice at our July sun. I bought a hard drive, go hunting for seal (from the rock of the seals) and ducks. The ducks are flying so much that from afar it looks like a black cloud, right thousands. Shoot ducks for lunch. Your Nicholas.

In the head of the bed shines, the moon shines.
Seemed like a frost fell it.
Looked at the moon I face to heaven drawing,

Article from magazine "Soviet North", No. 1 of 1931.
For the native North. To the organization of the first native schools on the Northern coast of the Chukchi Peninsula.
The Committee of the North under the Presidium of the vcic and the Department of Paleoasian languages received several radiograms and letters sent from the ship "Kolyma" on its difficult way between the ice of the Arctic ocean to the mouth of the Lena river. These messages are sent young ethnographers educated tootlely.Geological faculty, Leningrad is now the historical-linguistic Institute (LILI). Of them forstein A. S., and K. M. Forstein (Mylnikova) landed on the Cape of the Cape. They intend to conduct a comprehensive study of the chukch tribe in the area of the Chaunskaya Bay for three years. They assume in the first year to move deep into tundra together with chukchas, having organized nomadic school, from the second year to conduct stationary work. They are ready to live in a Chukchi yaranga – to all that live in the Chukchi. They are not afraid that within three years they may be, will not see a single European entity ( In Chaunskaya Guba possible only by the occasional visits of ships engaged on polar flights). Forstein, as you know, before he spent two years among the Eskimos in M. M. Dezhnev and Chaplin. The area of the Chaunskaya Bay is even more remote and unexplored place, completely unexplored from the point of view of Ethnography. In conditions not less difficult is N. B. Snakenberg, student toothdale, landed at Cape North (village Ryrkarpiy). Before he reached that point, he, like others, had to overcome many difficulties. Before leaving the Bay of Corfu, where he spent the winter, Schnakenburg sent a letter to Leningrad. "...For more than a year, as I left inleningrad, but can not arrive at the place of work. I guess we're all very far away. Maybe "Kolyma" in the Northern Cape will not stop, but I'm still somewhere will be released in Chukotka, but we'll get there. To go back is not for me." The other day, a radiogram from the ship " Kolyma "he said:"I Remain alone, I live safely, relations are established."

It is located in the center of a large native population – kukoc, lamuts, Chuvans, almost entirely unexplored. Korovushkin works in Apuka, Koryak among (tutoral). Last winter they worked in koreckij schools and conducted a major public work. Snakenberg, together with the Koryak-scouts, organized a national krackow troupe, he wrote plays for corecom language with great success to put them. In addition, almost all of them prepare for printing textbooks in national languages for schools of the 1st stage.Ethno-separation LILY can be proud of the fact that his worker in the North are pioneers of Soviet culture at the extreme Northern outposts of the USSR, performing his work great perseverance and enthusiasm.
Nikolai Borisovich Schnakenburg was a wonderful, kind, deeply Soviet man, very purposeful and very decent, romantic in his heart. With large scientific N plans.B.Have sneckenberger graduate Institute of anthropology and Ethnography*, he was a young talented and promising scientist. But to carry out their plans failed. Began the Great Patriotic war 1941-1945gg. Nikolai Borisovich had a reservation, freeing him from conscription, before the war he served in the Museum of anthropology and Ethnography named after Peter the Great RAS (Kunstkamera). But, he was summoned to the military Enlistment office of the Vasileostrovsky district and offered to volunteer for the front. The winter of 1941-42. – the most serious period of the siege of Leningrad. Nine employees of the Institute, among whom was Nikolai Borisovich, Schnakenburg, joined the ranks of the national militia, composed of the Primorskiy division, created in July 1941, much of which was academics. The weapons they had to get in a fight, so.... Especially heavy were the September fights when the enemy came close to Leningrad. They were ordered to fight to the death. And ... they were!
Nikolai Borisovich Schnakenburg died in the first same year war (in September 1941 him was the last letter), but about his fate learned not immediately: he fell in capturing. Fascists have proposed him, as a German, to cooperate with them, but he refused and was shot (supposedly in early October).
The last letter of Nikolai Borisovich, Snakenberg wife, Anna Mikhailovna Stepanova.
On July 4, 1941.
FORGIVE ME FOR EVERYTHING.
Sweet and dear, today or tomorrow I will write when I get a chance. Nyura, we got called to the pick-up point today. Barely had time to pack. Money on the top shelf, up there. Honey, pull yourself together, go to Ligovo. I'll be thinking of you. They'll let us go home. Kiss you, Mila, take care of her, yourself. Loving you both, the husband and the father of Nicholas.

The militia defended the borders of the city in the district of Stachek Avenue, where now lives the daughter of Nikolai Borisovich (previously the family lived on the Moika embankment). Anna M. 2-3 times had to go to the front to her husband by tram No. 36.
The light of gratitude and memory, with the light of love, the light of our tribulation, let them be filled with the names who gave their lives for our future, for our Great country!
Let us remember them by name, let us remember our sorrows,
it is necessary not dead, it must be alive!
The material for printing was prepared by Ludmila N. Snakenberg(Podobedova), daughter of Nikolai Borisovich, Schnakenburg, and Jeanne A. Parsheva. Photos from the family archive of L. N. Snakenberg (Podobashe).

Preface.
As I was busy with the pedigree of my family, so I could not assume, how many different mysteries and riddle I'm going to disclose.
I know the family legend (sage) of the romantic love of my great-grandfather's mothers side of the farmer from Shenkursk, Korobizyn Ivan Ilyin to the Gypsy girl Mariula, the daughter of the Gypsy Baron.
I also learned about the mysterious Disappearance of Irina Korobizyna, the daughter of Mitro Ivanovich Korobizyn, the brother of the father of my mother, Korobizyn Stephen(Stepan) Ivanovich. My mother Korobizyna Nina Stepanovna has told that Irina was a nice Girl and she was a ball dancer in the big (Big) theatre in Moscow. Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin, the Oldest of Russia took part in your destiny part, he helped her get an apartment in Moscow. All of a sudden she disappeared without a trace. This mystery did not understand.
My grandmother Julia Kelestinowna, born Kosmina, married all of a sudden (unexpectedly) to 2.The German, Adolf Christian Emil von Schnakenburg.
Adolf Christian Emil von Schnackenburg 1912-13gg.
In the last years of her life my mother reinnerte to the uncle Adolf, it was a hiher nice man with the beard, he was a gutmuetiger, but a strict man. He played lots of times together with his children, he punished his children for their Schelmerei. Once the children made a fire in the nursery, but even in this case, language only strict and serious.
Unfortunately, she has forgotten completely his family name. Sometimes she remembered the family name "gnats Bruck", it is no wonder! It has been many years of silence in the still. That put me into confusion because I have heard such a family name in my family, never. I couldn't understand how this man came in Arkhangelsk. At the time, I grwuesst nothing about "The German Sloboda"(The German settlement"). I wish nothing about such a relationship. Absolute Riddle!
I turned to my colleagues who were also working in the study and the pedigree of the German family name (your ancestors essentially merchants) scales. But no one has heard such a family name.
Once at the beginning of my search, I found a Contest about the baptism of a Klienkindes Korobizyn Kelestin Stepanovich in the matriculation book (in the office). It's my uncle Kelestin Korobizyn. As a sponsor at Baptisms in the Kursk Cathedral (Church) were shown: "Saint-Petersburg merchant of the 1.Guild Dmitry Pavlov Krutov (who is Who? Again, a riddle!) and the wife of the older(upper) Aufseheres the Arkhangelsk and excise administration, the College assessor by Adolf Christian von Schnakenburg, Julie Kelestinowna Schnakenburg".
Then (read more) I turned to the help to the state archive of the Arkhangelsk area Sanakina Tatyana Anatolyevna. From the archive, I got the document with the person to the alien (incomplete) and death testimony of Adolf Christian v. Schnakenburg. He is on 24.February 1918 died in Arkhangelsk in pulmonary tuberculosis. He was buried in first Lutheran cemetery.
It was a beginning of my search, and other Information I learned from the memorial books and Adreskalendern of the Arkhangelsk province. But I want more refahren not only his Person, but also via dei ancestors of this page. All of a sudden helped me a opportunity!
Gefaellig I read a book "Germans in the Russian North". There is the article of Shumilov, Nikolai Alexeyevich was published. At that time, he served as Director of the state archives of the Arkhangelsk region. At the end of the article there was a footnote about a certain man — "Mr. Heinrich Meyer v. Eltz, gegenwaetig deceased" lived in Hamburg. This man has been busy with the studies and put Together the pedigrees of the German families that lived in Arkhangelsk. I meant that after the death of the gentlemen Heinrich Meyer v. Eltz, its archives remained, and if his Relatives are good and understanding people ready to go,so help me. I turned to the Red cross in Germany and asked this organization to find the help of the Relatives of the men, Heinrich Meyer v. Eltz. It happened in February 2001.
From Germany came the answer. Mr. H. Meyer, v. Eltz is alive and well. He replied to me and we start to stand in the exchange of letters. Even friend us! I had to study again English, because my friend can't Russian, he was transported to seven-year course of age, in Deutschlsnd, but I can English good not to be on this exchange of letters.
Mr. Heinrich Meyer knew of these family names, and even schnakenburg of the first marriage was with the older son of Adolf Christian v. known. It's Hugen, Adolf v. was Schnakenburg (*1885 St. Petersburg — +Hamburg?). Their acquaintance lasted until 1939.
Mr H. Meyer sent me many documents the pedigrees of the families : luers, Linde, stop, Scholz, van Brienen and others, who lived in Arkhangelsk", The German Sloboda". He also sent me Write from a "German sex book ",volume 79, Leipzig, 1933, with his notes, which belonged to the relationship (Generation, gender) by Adolf Christian Emil v. schnakenburg.
Best thanks to him for this help and cooperation. Unfortunately, my friend Heinrich Meyer v. Eltz died on 01.04.2006. I have him in good memory!
